Tell Me About San Diego and Salt Lake City Theater

No, I’m not going insane asking about two totally different places. There’s a method to my madness of asking about both the Salt Lake City and San Diego theater scene.

In hopes to broaden my theater network, I’m hoping to reach out to theater artists in both San Diego and Salt Lake City! I’m particularly interested in theaters/individuals out there trying to get new plays produced. Since I’m in both Salt Lake (that’s where my husband is from and his folks and brother are still there) and San Diego (my home town!) throughout the year, I thought they’d be ideal places to meet new artists and broaden my horizons. So, are you familiar with the theater scenes in either of these cities? Email me your favorite spot to see theater (my email is rnbublitz@gmail.com), or people in the community I should try to meet. I’m also hoping to catch shows when I’m in these towns, so if you’re involved in any upcoming shows, I’d love to hear about them as well!

Thanks everybody!

Submission Opportunity With Quiet Lightning #pwopp

Quiet Lightning is a monthly reading series and publication sparkle + blink that travels around San Francisco, taking over different galleries, bars, and more to present new writers and their work. They look for all kids of different types of writing (8 minutes or less) and have a rolling deadline.

If you’re interested in getting involved, you can submit your work here: https://quietlightning.submittable.com/submit/26143, deadline is January 15th. The only catch is that you must be around to present your work.

Good luck!

Finished My #PlayGroundCA Script, Now on to GERYON!

Okay, I’ve sent in my first submission for 2014, only 356 to go! The play was Happy In California, and it was for Monday Night PlayGround! The topic was CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ and I struggled writing the first half of many plays, sticking with two, and in the end went with my gut and punched my favorite one into shape so that I could make the 2pm deadline. This was a hard month for me, not sure if it’s lag from vacation, or something else, but I got it in!

And now I work on Geryon! I have a first draft due date set for the end of this month, with hopes to have a reading in February. I’m excited to get the ball rolling, because I have another exciting play I want to get started on, but I’m hoping to have Geryon in a second or third draft before I start working that one out.

Okay, Geryon, ready, set, GO!

2014 Goal

I have just one goal this year. In 2014 I plan on submitting 365 plays. That’s a play for each day in 2014. So far I’m already behind, as I’ve submitted zip in the past six days, but I am confident that I’ll be able to catch up.

Want to see how I’m doing? The last day of each month I’ll post my numbers so you can see how I’m doing in the challenge.

Do you have theater related goals for 2014? If so, please share! I’d love to hear how other folks plan on challenging themselves in the coming year.

PlayGround Topic Announced: CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’: Ten-Minute Plays Inspired by the California Experience #playgroundCA

PlayGround has announced the topic for Monday’s (1/13) reading, and it is…… CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’: Ten-Minute Plays Inspired by the California Experience.

Both LA and Bay Area writers are writing at the same time! Exciting! The Bay Area writers are in a pool, but the LA submissions are still open to anyone living in Los Angeles (for details go to: http://playground-la.org/submit/).

Now get to writing! You only have until Tuesday (1/7) at 2pm!

A Look Back at 2013

2013 is over! 2014 is here! How do you feel about that? I feel pretty great. 2013 was a very exciting year for me. I had a public reading or production in each month of 2013 except for October. That’s pretty exciting. I also directed for the first time in years, and I dipped my toes into producing as well. I also got rejected, accepted, and started grad school, which is a funny story all in itself (remember? Rejected from SFSU’s MFA program followed by The Clerical Error). Lots of ups and downs in the theatre world, but also in my other worlds. My kids and I are figuring out my MFA schedule, it’s an adjustment going from 24/7 mom to mom being away two nights a week and having homework. But in the ups section, Audrey Scare People Play happened in 2013! Audrey learned to read in 2013. And Jonah is starting to preform around the house (he’s like a human sound effect machine), and it’s great to see him blossoming now that Audrey’s away at kindergarten. OH! And also in 2013, I got all A’s for my first semester at SFSU! Woo!

So, all and all, 2013 was all right with me, and with 2014 coming after, I have pretty high hopes.

Vacation!

Tomorrow my family and I leave for San Diego, the city of my childhood. I can’t wait to see mi familia and play the usual reindeer games (Jewish people play reindeer games too).

I’m going to be taking the rest of the year off from my blog (all less than two weeks of it), so this is it until 2014! Unless I get any great news, that I’ll be posting right away.

I hope you have a safe and love-filled holiday(s), and see you next year!r

INVEST in the ARTISTS! Give to PlayGround Today

PlayGround is raising money right now in these last few days of their 20th year! From their blog (http://networkedblogs.com/RYHr0):

“As we count down twenty days of PlayGround’s 20th Season Year-End Campaign, we’re pleased to share with you a daily testimonial from PlayGround artists, subscribers and supporters and community leaders. To participate in the Year-End Campaign, make a tax-deductible contribution online at Causes.com or on the PlayGround website, or call us at (415) 992-6677.”

I’ve enjoyed reading through the testimonials and I think you will too! And here’s the link for your donations: https://www.causes.com/campaigns/67350-invest-in-the-artists.

Thank you! As one of the artists, we couldn’t do it without you!

MOM’S HAM Was a Blast

I can’t stop smiling today, because I can’t stop thinking of last night! Mom’s Ham at PlayGround’s (Twisted) HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA was fantastic! I had a superb group of actors (Lisa Morse, Mark Rafael Truitt, Valerie Weak, Lindsey Marie Schmeltzer, Soren Oliver, and Tyler Kent), and an amazing director, Jennifer King. AND, the house at the Rhoda (at Berkeley Rep) was filled with a wonderful audience. It was the largest audience I’ve ever had see my work, and adding all those things up together equals a very thankful/happy playwright! I can’t think of a better way to bring this year to a close!

What will 2014 have in store? I can’t wait to find out!
