Curious about what the new title is? COME AND SEE TONIGHT!

We’ll announce it on stage and after the play you can tell me how much you love/hate it. It’ll be great!

But really, tonight, 8pm, at EXIT Theatre. Be there folks! DO IT!

See you tonight!

All My Loud and Unladylike Fears

Maybe you don’t know. Maybe you live under a rock, and today you just happen to get out from under your comfy rock, and you see that a festival that I started opens up today. That could be true. But, let’s be honest, I’ve been blasting this show around the web so much that you’re probably like, “Okay, yeah, Rachel, I get it.” Well, I don’t get it. And that’s why I have to tell you again, DIVAfest’s Loud & Unladylike Festival opens TONIGHT! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! For reals. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for the show, and I can’t wait to share it with ALL the people, but really. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Here are my fears in no specific order:

  1. What if no one comes? PS, this is a GREAT time to buy your tickets: http://divafest.info/.
  2. What if NO ONE COMES? Yeah, this is such a big fear, it gets the #1 and #2 spot.
  3. What if I was wrong? I’m not sure what about, maybe about the festival, maybe about my life choices. Either way, there’s a chance that I’m wrong.
  4. What if no one comes?
  5. What if people walk out?
  6. What if people throw things at Claire, Tracy, and me?
  7. What if the theater catches fire?
  8. WHAT IF NO ONE COMES?
  9. What if I can’t leave the house because my son, who has the flu, gives it to my daughter and my husband, and I’m the only not sick one left and I have to stay and take care of them. Am I a bad playwright for this? Am I a bad mother if I don’t?
  10. What if I can’t leave the house because my son, who has the flu, gives it to ME. Will I be a terrible person and risk infecting the world and go anyway? HOW CAN I NOT GO?
  11. What if there’s traffic and all the people who want to be there can’t get there in time?
  12. What if there’s traffic and I’m late?
  13. What if no one comes?
  14. What if NO ONE understands my play? My play is, and I hate to use this term, but it’s experimental. At least for me, it is. It has like 20 characters all played by an ensemble of 6. There’s Spanish, French, and German in the play. THERE’S NO PLOT. Yeah, there is PURPOSELY no plot.
  15. What if no one is there to not understand my play?
  16. What if my play doesn’t do Nancy Wake justice?
  17. What if her ghost HATES the play and she haunts me the rest of my life for it?
  18. Is it supposed to be CODENAME or CODE NAME? Am I doing it wrong???
  19. WHAT IF NO ONE COMES?
  20. What if the city runs out of milkshakes? WHAT WILL WE DRINK AFTER THE SHOW?

Oddly, I feel a lot better. So thanks. For listening.

OKAY! BUY THOSE TICKETS!!!!!!!!!

READING BABAR in 2070 Reviewed on Huffington Post!

So I guess my Google Alert is good for things other than telling me every time that I write a new blog post, because today it alerted me to the fact that READING BABAR IN 2070 was mentioned on Huffington Post! Here’s what George Heymont had to say on my ten-minute play from the Best of PlayGround Festival 19:

“Written by Rachel Bublitz and directed by Rebecca Ennals, Reading Babar in 2070 is filled with the kinds of twists and turns worthy of a short story by Guy de Maupassant. As the action begins, a very pregnant Lucia (Stephanie Prentice) is asleep on the couch, taking a nap. When her husband, Michael (Michael Barrett Austin) and daughter Tina (Millie DeBenedet) return from grocery shopping and a trip to the library, Tina launches into an impassioned speech about why she loves elephants and asks her parents to read a book to her that she brought home from the library.

“The politically correct Lucia scolds her husband for bringing home a book about Babar the Elephant, explaining that it’s not really about elephants at all. But there is no stopping Tina, whose love for elephants nearly surpasses her love for her parents.

“Lucia’s self-righteous bubble quickly bursts when the conversation turns to the fact that, with the exception of the few pachyderms living in zoos, in 2070 elephants are extinct. With a child’s laser-like instincts, Tina asks what her parents did to help save the elephants, only to learn that when Lucia and Michael were in college they were “too busy” to pay attention.”

Also mentioned was Erin Panttaja’s PREAPOCALYPTICA! You can read the entire article here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-heymont/a-sense-of-foreboding_b_7614146.html

See, those of you who missed it, are a little sad now! But don’t despair, because next week you’ll have a new opportunity to see my work! Next week is the first week of DIVAfest’s Loud & Unladylike Festival! CODE NAME: BRASS ROSE will have it’s first public reading Saturday June 27th at 8pm!

DIVAfest’s Loud & Unladylike Festival Opens in Less Than Two Weeks

People, we’re close. WE ARE SO CLOSE. DIVAfest’s brand-spanking-new staged reading festival kicks off next Thursday. THAT IS ONE WEEK FROM THURSDAY! AHHHHHHHH! I can’t wait. Really, I’m so freakin’ excited about all of this, and the only way to make it better would be to cram the EXIT Studio to capacity with bodies so that we can share this crazy idea with as many people as possible. And that includes you! Really. Seriously. Yeah, we need you to be there. And I’m not just thinking about us here, really, the festival is gonna rock, and you’re going to be super sad if you miss it. Forget why this festival is gonna rock? Here are three reasons why:

  1. We give writers time to write.

Yep. This year each writer had a little less than a year to write their play, and we will get to see them up and running in incredibly fast turn around time where theater is concerned. Usually you write the play, work on it in secret, then send it out to the world and hear nothing. Then you put it away and work on the next play. But not these plays! Nope. Stealing the great ideas of the San Francisco Olympians Festival each writer gets a commission and time to write something new. ALSO, and this is a little different from the SF Olympians Festival, each writer gets to see their plays performed TWICE with time in between to brainstorm and rewrite. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a staged reading, that I’ve learned a TON, and did some great rewrites, but then had no way to see if the new material worked. Or I had to wait months or longer before I could put another reading together. This festival lets writers write AND rewrite. It’s almost too good to be true.

  1. We’re telling stories you should know!

Each of this year’s inspirational women are people I had never heard of before, and now I can’t get enough of them. People all over, me included, are complaining that we’re not seeing enough stories with women in the driver’s seat on stage, this isn’t something that will change over night. And while complaining can feel pretty great, I think it’s time we try to change it. That is why Claire, Tracy, and I started the Loud & Unladylike Festival. We want to be a part of the solution. And the GREAT thing, is that just by coming to see our readings, you can be too.

  1. We’re cheap.

For $10 a ticket, can you afford NOT To come see the festival? (No, the answer is no.) Hell for that price you could see ALL of the plays twice and still pay less than a pair of seats at a lot of theaters. IT IS A DEAL.

Tickets & more info: http://divafest.info/

Schedule of plays:

“A is for Adeline” inspired by the life of Adeline Dutton Train Whitney, written by Tracy Held Potter, directed by Britney Frazier (June 25) and Rebecca Ennals (July 9), June 25th and July 9th.

“The Effects of Ultraviolet Light” inspired by the life of Roger Arliner Young, written by Claire Ann Rice, directed by Ellery Schaar, June 26th and July 11th.

“Code Name: Brass Rose” inspired by the life of Nancy Wake, written by Rachel Bublitz, directed by Melinda Marks, June 27th and July 10th.

So buy those tickets, and get your butt to the theater. This is going to be fantastic.

About to give up all hope of stardom, they receive word that they might just have one last shot: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for them, everything that might go wrong does in this hysterically funny comedy.”

July 17 – August 8 at the EXIT Theatre in San Francisco!

Playwrights include: Jennifer Lynne Roberts, Melissa Keith, Jaene Leonard, Charles Lewis III, Morgan Ludlow, Laylah Muran de Assereto, Conrad Panganiban, Bridgette Dutta Portman, and Karl Schackne. Both shows will be directed by the WONDERFUL Ariel Craft.

ZERO HOUR: THE MARS EXPERIMENT

“Would you leave everything behind, all the comforts of earthly life—friends, family, ice cream, sex—for the experiment? To live in isolation and the experience taped for a reality show for the people back home on Earth, so that you can be a pioneer, the first to colonize the planet Mars? These six humans did. They left their jobs. Some lost their families. They underwent physical and mental evaluations. They signed contracts. They trained. They made love for the last time. And at ZERO HOUR, they made peace with their decision. But that was six months and sixty-eight days ago.”

I SAW IT

“Did you? An anomalous event has occurred. A city in ruins. Some are saying it wasn’t an act of nature, but a creature, a shadow, a…something. Rumors run rampant, suspicions run high. The #ISawIt hashtag has gone viral. Unsubstantiated reports, conspiracy theories, panic! Does Isla have the answers everyone wants? The government thinks so. Inside an interrogation room, Isla is questioned while outside, a city tries to recover.”

SO Much GREAT Bay Area Theater Happening This Summer!

This morning I sat down to look at my calendar and suffered a panic attack realizing how many amazing things are happening this summer here in the Bay Area. It might seem like it’s a good thing to outsiders (really, it is) but I can’t make it to everything, hence the heaving and wheezing and general spazing out of my mind and body. OY! Why can’t I make copies of myself or build a time machine. WHY?

Well, I might just look into those things, but in the meantime, I think this means that YOU have to go see things in my absence. Yep, that is the ONLY way we’re going to work all this out. I’ll see what I can see, you see everything else, and we’ll meet for coffee and catch one another up, okay? OKAY? You need to go with me on this or the hyperventilating is going to start back up.

What great stuff is happening? SO glad you asked, because here’s (insert drumroll, please):

The Breadbox presents: THE PILLOWMAN by Martin McDonagh, directed by Ariel Craft

Running June 12 – June 27 at EXIT Theatre in SF!

“Life imitates art in this comedy so dark you’ll wish you had a flashlight. This Olivier Award winning turn from Irish playwright McDonagh follows Katurian, prolific author of fairy tales more twisted than the Grimms’, as his entire life unravels before him over the course of a single day. Someone’s been torturing and murdering local children in step with Katurian’s fiction and the writer himself will have to answer for their deaths. “The Pillowman” is a fearless exploration of our capacities for cruelty, a culture of police brutality, and the far-reaching impact of our own creations.”

Seriously, The Breadbox puts on some fantastic shows, and Ariel Craft is one of my favorite directors.

Tickets: http://www.breadboxtheatre.org/#!buy-tickets/c1gcv

Aurora Theatre presents: DETROIT by Lisa D’Amour, directed by Josh Costello

Running June 19 – July 19 at Aurora Theatre in Berkeley!

“Lisa D’Amour’s Detroit, a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, is a wickedly funny satire about our uncertain, deflating economic times. Barely middle class Ben and Mary fire up the grill to welcome Sharon and Kenny, a couple who moves in next door (suspiciously without furniture). But as this foursome bonds over backyard barbecues, remembered dreams and helping hands, their neighborly connection turns dangerous, threatening to destroy more than just their friendship.”

True story, I just read this play a few weeks ago, and I was thought, “Man oh man, I really want to see this done!” And then the next day I saw that Aurora was about to open the show just a mile from my place! I really can’t wait for this one.

Half of them are out of state, and if you go to one more wedding with a cash bar, you might kill the Universal Life Church Officiant. We cordially invite you to a night of comedy focused on just how ridiculous the wedding season can get! (KML is registered at CVS Pharmacies, but your presence is the real present.)”

Custom Made Theatre Co. presents the San Francisco premiere of GREY GARDENS: THE MUSICAL book by Doug Wright, music by Scott Frankel, and lyrics by Michael Korie, directed by Stuart Bousel

Running now through July 5th at Gough Street Playhouse in SF!

“Based on a true story, Grey Gardens is a musical exploration of the American dream gone wrong and what it means to become a social pariah. It’s also an exploration of women, the relationship between mothers and daughters, how love can turn into dependency, and how, in a society where women’s roles and options are limited, particularly in the aristocratic class, the very things that make one exceptional could ultimately be what damns them to a life in decay and shadows. Featuring an intimate, musical score that borrows as much from Stephen Sondheim as the eras in which it is set, Grey Gardens is the perfect chamber musical that will use the intimacy of Gough Street Playhouse to haunt as well as delight.”

So far I have heard only FABULOUS things about this production, and they’re selling so well they’ve already put in an extension. My recommendation? Buy those tickets ASAP!

JULY

No Nude Men presents: DESK SET by William Marchant, directed by Stuart Bousel

Running July 9 – 25 at the EXIT Theatre in SF.

“Dusted off and polished-up, this clever comedy about four women researchers who find their careers threatened by technological advancements that produce a machine capable of replacing them is surprisingly relevant, touching on everything from gender roles in the workplace to the ever changing expectations of professionals in the post tech-boom world. Though No Nude Men keeps the comedy in its 1950s setting, it won’t be hard for today’s audiences to draw the connections that make this piece more of the moment than ever. Add in more than a dash of retro kitsch, including nightly games and drink specials, and there’s no question this will be a show everyone is talking about!

“Featuring a stellar cast of local actors: Megan Briggs, Andrew Calabrese, Alan Coyne, Lisa Drostova, Abhi Kris, Allison Page, Carina Lastimosa Salazar, Marissa Skudlarek, Jeunee Simon, Alejandro Torres, Kitty Torres, Nick Trengove.”

This cast. THIS CAST! Yeah, Desk Set is going to be killer.

“It all takes place in the EXIT Cafe (156 Eddy Street) from 8:30-8:50 pm for registration, followed by a 9:00 pm writing sprint where writers have 30 minutes (more or less) to script original monologues based around that night’s pre-generated prompts. We cast actors from the crowd (no experience necessary), then at 9:30 pm, they perform the work on stage in the café for an on-the-spot, one-night-only, instant festival! Come join in the communal creativity, either as writer, performer, or audience!”

This is one of my favorite Saturday night activities, it should be one of yours as well! For more info, visit the Facebook event page for the next SWF: https://www.facebook.com/events/477929019038762/

So there you have it, I’ll take some, you take some, we’ll meet and fill one another in on what we missed, yes? And don’t worry, the fun isn’t coming to a stop, because once we’re done with Summer, we’ll have the SF Fringe Festival!

Playwright and Director Speed Date Tomorrow With the Bay Area Dramatists Guild

Tomorrow from 11 to 1 at Tides Theatre join me and the Bay Area Dramatists Guild for their first ever Playwright & Director Speed Dating Event! From the Facebook event page:

“Directors can be tremendous advocates for new work being developed and produced. If you feel like you could benefit from knowing more directors, please join the Bay Area Dramatists Guild for a Playwright and Director Speed Dating session!

Bagels and coffee included for this free event!”

I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for reasons to get into a room and talk shop with fellow artists. This is a great opportunity to share why you’re passionate about theater, and what you hope to share with the world. And you never know, you might meet your next major collaborator!

Some get those business cards ready and come get your networking on!
