A Brand New and Terrifying Play

For the past week I’ve been working my butt off to get a first draft done of a brand new play because this coming Sunday I’m having talented folks come together to read it. The play scares the crap out of me. It isn’t a horror play either. It’s a play about rape.

Let me back up for a quick second and say that in all honesty I never in my life intended to write a play about rape. The vast majority of issue-based plays are boring to me. After the lights come up you quickly discover that you are not actually watching a play, but instead a 2 hour lecture. I do not want to write one of those plays. But, last semester in my short play workshop, I was inspired by something to do with sexual assault and before I knew it, that was a major element of the 60 minute one-act I was developing. As I dug into the characters I figured out that it needed a second act, and here we are. I’m developing a full-length play about rape.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that there are a lot of “issues” that we need to talk more about, and people having the ability to turn down sex and have that respected is one of them. I mean, if you look at sexual assault specifically, most folks (me included), find ourselves fearing the crazy guy in the bushes who’ll jump out and attack as soon as the sun sets, but that isn’t what it looks like most of the time. Most of the time it’s someone you know. Most of the time it’s a friend. And most of the time we don’t even consider this assault because of the relationship we might have with the attacker. And that is what got me going.

My brother started college last fall and when our dad went to parent’s orientation a mom there asked if she should arm her daughter with mace. The head of security told her no, because her daughter probably wouldn’t mace a friend, and that’s who is most likely pose a threat. And we’ve all been there, right? If I’m being honest, and it’s hard to admit, I definitely have. In high school I had very close male friends pressure me into situations that I had no interest in and wasn’t comfortable with. But we stayed friends. And no one, me included, thought anyone had done anything wrong.

I’m not saying that I can fix any of this. I wish I could, but I can’t. And the play I’m working on, it can’t fix it either. I’m only hoping to create a character driven play that doesn’t paint neat boxes around right and wrong, but instead makes people think and talk about rape and sexual assault in a new way. It’s a tall freakin’ order, and there’s a high likelihood that I will fail miserably. But then again I didn’t start writing plays because it’s easy.

More to come as I plow away at this beast. Oh! If you’re interested in well written, disturbing, fabulous plays that deal with societal issues, check out THE NETHER by Jennifer Haley. It’s my inspiration to tread in such controversial waters and everyone should read it.

Enjoy your Thursday!

Of SERPENTS and SEA SPRAY in @CustomMadeSF’s 2015/16 Season #newplay

SO incredibly beyond thrilled and excited to announce that my full-length play OF SERPENTS & SEA SPRAY will be produced in Custom Made Theatre’s 2015/16 season! Keep your January and February clear, because now you’ve got plans. OF SERPENTS & SEA SPRAY will be directed by Ariel Craft!

Here’s more about the play:

“World Premiere!

Jan-Feb ‘15: OF SERPENTS AND SEA SPRAY by Rachel Bublitz. Directed by Assistant Artistic Director, Ariel Craft.

OF SERPENTS AND SEA SPRAY, a CMTC commission written by emerging Bay Area playwright Rachel Bublitz, tells the story of an orphan named Iro who is the subject of ridicule by other children and punishment by uncaring foster parents. During one of her many tours through solitary confinement in the closet, Iro’s imagination brings her with a mission: find Pegasus. On her quest, taking with her only books and her imaginary friend Annika, Iro hides herself on an ocean liner, joins a circus, and has many other adventures… and along the way finds the truth about the death of her parents.

In SERPENTS, Bublitz embraces the playfulness and malleability of a child’s imagination while she courageously wrestles with the harshest of realities that occasionally invade our lives far too early and well before we’re equipped for them. Through the example of our heroine, Bublitz asks the audience to address the balance of light and dark within our own lives, and the inextricable link between the two.”

I might combust from joy right now.

More to come. All the things to come!

Jan/Feb 2016 baby!

CLEVER CATHERINE Is Being Licensed Through YouthPLAYS

My thirty minute children’s play CLEVER CATHERINE, adapted from the Italian folk tale “Sly Country Lass,” is being licensed through YouthPLAYS! That means folks from all over can find it on their website or in the catalogs and order it for performance or to read! I just went over the proof copy, fixing the typos with an editor, and soon it will be available for purchase! Rest assured that I will let you know the moment that is the case.

Love Me Some Collaboration

I’m not sure this is true for everyone, but for me, there comes a point when I’m writing a play, usually around the 3rd or 4th draft, when it becomes like gibberish. Like when you say a word again and again and eventually it has no meaning. I like to think of it as “soup brain.” For the past few weeks I’ve been trying like mad to get a new draft of a play done and to give it a title. This title, for this play has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my playwriting life. With all my other works there came a point, typically by the second draft, when a title clicked and it could be called nothing else. Always. Except now. And so this play has become a royal pain in the behind.

Lucky for me, I have some amazing collaborators in my life. I’ve had quite a few folks ping titles back and forth with me. And even better, I’ve had a few folks read the play. And one of those generous folks asked me a question which completely broke open the second act for me, just like magic. AND even better than that, from the conversation we had around act two, I think I have a title! Hope like hell for me that this one sticks.

I know not everybody works like I do, but I think it’s helpful, since theater itself is such a collaborative medium, to remember that when you’re stuck you can ask for help. And now I must go, I have the second half of a play to rewrite.

Circe Research @SFOlympiansFest #sfolympians6

I’m knee deep in research at the moment, trying to discover who Circe, the inspiration behind my next San Francisco Olympians Festival one-act play, is. I picked up a book by Giovanni Boccaccio called ON FAMOUS WOMEN, and he has some interesting insights:

“She made many men become haughty because of her matchless attraction, and so those who through this wicked woman’s deeds appeared to have lost human reason seemed to have been deservedly changed into beasts through their own crimes.”

And:

“If we consider human behavior, we can well understand from this example that there are many Circes everywhere and many other men are changed into beasts by their lustfulness and their vices.”

PS, ON FAMOUS WOMEN was written in the 1360s, and so far it doesn’t seem like Giovanni likes women all that much… At least not the lustful ones.

So far you’re pretty great Circe, I can’t wait to get to know you better.

Be sure and mark your calendars for the reading of my Circe play (Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 8pm at the Exit Theatre)! It will be joined by a new one-act by Kirk Shimano inspired by Aeolus. And, and, AND, the whole night will be directed by Claire Rice!

Okay, enough goofing off, I’ve got to get back to work.

What I Wrote in 2014

2014 was busy. And not just a little busy, but like BUSY. I had this constant feeling of being under water on nearly all of my projects, getting a gasp here and there, but mostly just freaking the hell out. But, with it being behind us and all, I thought I’d look back and see what I got done in that back breaking year. And so….

What I Wrote In 2014!

Full Lengths:

IRO ST. CLOUD; THE QUEST FOR PEGASUS

Finally a title I don’t hate! We’ll see if it sticks… But, Iro St. Cloud; The Quest For Pegasus, was commissioned by Custom Made Theatre. It follows the story of one orphan’s quest to find the mythical winged horse Pegasus. I started the play in February of 2014, had a first draft by April, second draft in June, third draft after the reading in September, and I just finished up draft four!

GIRL FRIEND – a screenplay!

My first screenplay! I started Girl Friend, the anti-romantic comedy about a girl trying to convince her best friend to not have romantic feelings for her, back in June. I banged out the first and second draft in August, and in a crazy furor managed to finish a third draft amidst the holiday and submitting insanity of December.

One-Acts:

THE RED HOUSE MONSTER

Based on the myth of Geryon, commissioned by The San Francisco Olympians Festival, The Red House Monster is a thriller, following the head-strong Hannah Gold and her obsession with The Red House and its occupant. A fantastic reading of The Red House Monster terrified its audience back in November with the help of Ariel Craft, the brilliant director, and my outstanding cast: Megan Briggs, Jan Gilbert, Maria Leigh, Eden Neuendorf, and Ron Talbot.

THE LOST GHOST, an adaptation

A final project for my Playcrafting and Dramaturgy class, I adapted The Lost Ghost by Mary E. Wilkins into a twenty minute horror play. In the play, Mrs. John Emerson is dragged back into her first hand ghost experience as she tells the story to a friend.

Ten Minute Scripts:

Many of my ten-minute plays from 2014 came from PlayGround prompts, and to that I am grateful. They inspired the following plays:

And one man in his time plays many parts…’

                         - from Shakespeare’s As You Like It

READING BABAR IN 2070 – October

Topic: IS EARTH F**KED?

And Reading Babar in 2070 was selected! It was performed at Berkeley Rep and down at Stanford as a special treat.

THE APPLICANTS – November

PEPE LE PEW

Written for and performed at Playwright Foundation’s 5th Annual San Francisco One Minute Play Festival this past December.

TRAINED FOR LOVE

Also written for and performed at the #1MPF!

EXCAVATION 5014

Still-To-Be-Finished Scripts:

LUCY (working title), full length

One of my final projects for my Short Play Writing Workshop last semester was a play about consent and the gray areas of rape, not a topic I ever imagined I’d write about but felt completely compelled to. I was (and still am) proud of this play, and upon finishing Act One, I realized that there was a second act to be written.

Writing For 2015:

This year I have a few huge projects on the horizon; a full-length play inspired by Nancy Wake for DIVAfest’s LOUD & UNLADYLIKE New Play Festival happening this summer, a one-act play inspired by the sea-witch Circe for the 6th Annual SF Olympians Festival, and finishing up the second half of Lucy. I’ll also be working on my thesis for my Master’s in English degree – I’m on the two-degrees-for-the price-of-one track at SFSU, and finishing up the rest of the classes I need for my MFA. And yes, submitting like an insane person.

I’m excited. I’m ready. 2015, let’s do this.
